Sculpture
Caldwell’s work includes sculptures in wood, clay and mixed media.
Fertility Goddesses
Created while Caldwell was in Amman, Jordan. Note the shards are all authentic, ranging in age from the Nabatean to the Omayad period (c.300 BC - 700 AD). The sculptures are all "quoted" from historical originals to juxtapose ancient depictions of femininity.
Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness
This nearly life-size sculpture of wood and mixed media is inspired by the iconography of the Virgin and Child during the Middle Ages. The sculpture highlights the contrasts of women’s experiences. The images to the left of the figure are positive, life affirming and those on her right are negative, images of oppression.
Figures Upon Rocks
Sculptures on rocks gathered from Martha’s Vineyard, the Middle East, and Beyond.
Wood Figures
Wood of all kinds, from Miami palm fronds to driftwood washed onto Vineyard beaches, reimagined into mythical characters.
