Susanna Caldwell
Caldwell is an American painter and sculptor who has lived most of her life outside the United States in the Far East and the Middle East. She is now back in the USA and living on the island of Martha’s Vineyard. She creates three-dimensional wall collages, mixed media paintings, and sculptures in wood, clay, and stone. Persistent themes in her work are fertility, creativity and the iconography of myth. Her paintings often have a strong narrative element. Her current work combines fully three-dimensional, painted or unpainted, clay or resin figures against a painted ground or in painted and sculpted environments.
Caldwell received her B.A. in English and Art from Wellesley College, Wellesley, MA. She also studied Literature at Durham University in England; Ceramic Sculpture at Alfred University, New York; Oriental Brush-Painting, Calligraphy, and Aesthetics at Ewha University and Yonsei University, Seoul, Korea; and Pottery in Kyoto, Japan. In addition to painting and sculpting, she works as a teacher, illustrator, and as a graphics, set and costume designer. Many of her works are in private collections in The United States, Europe, and Asia.
